We’ve been walking in the area around Craig Cwm Silyn for a while but there were 3 peaks over 2000 feet (609.6 metres) that hadn’t we been up. Over this last weekend we put that right.
We ticked all the 3000 plus feet Welsh peaks a good while ago so, we had been looking at more of these smaller hills as a lesser challenge. That my friends is a mistake on two counts.
Firstly, it is easy to think that if you’ve bimbled up a large hill, a smaller one will be easy. Wrong!
Secondly, there is a temptation to think that the taller peaks will offer the best views simply because you’re higher. Also wrong.
If you’re starting your Snowdon ascent from Rhyd-Ddu, look to the other side of the road (the A 4085) and consider the challenges you see. Although these peaks are smaller than the big one you came for, believe me, they’re just as testing (sometimes more so) and the view if you’re lucky, can be spectacular. Add to this that you’ll probably not see more than a handful of other walkers, these “little” hills will give you a great day out.
